To borrow materials from a local public library, please directly visit and use the library. Please follow the lending rules defined by the library in that case.
You can search for books and journals held by other university libraries in Japan at [Other Univ.] tab. You cannnot search for articles at [Other Univ.] tab. Please use [Article] tab when you want to search for journal articles and newspaper articles.
When you enter keywords and click the Search button, NII Search Results will be shown. When you select one of the NII search results, NII Bibliography Details will be shown. Please click the following of "Get it from another Library" at the menu on the right and make a ILL request.

You can search for journal articles, proceedings and chapters of books from a lot of databases in [Articles] tab simultaneously.
When you enter a search term at the "Basic Search" and click the “Search” button, then the search results of Discovery will be displayed. - "Content type" of the search result will be limited to "Journal Article", "Magazine Article", "Paper", "Conference Proceeding", "Dissertation", "Book Chapter" and "Trade Publication Article".
When you click "Advanced Search", the advanced search screen of Discovery will be displayed. - "Content type" can not be limited previously.
- Sometimes the data included in "Discovery" are not fresher than in each databases, therefore in "Discovery" you may not be able to find the materials which you can find in each databases.

When you search for articles in a specific subject: You can search for articles in a specific subject by two ways. *Both the KULINE [Articles] tab and [Discovery] tab are provided by using a unified search tool, the "Discovery". When you would like to search for articles only, [Articles] tab is handy.
(1) Selecting databases appropriate for your subject On the Advanced Search page at the KULINE [Articles] tab , please select the subject from the pull-down list named "By Subject" under "Find databases". - It is also possible to access databases which Kyoto University subscribes to at "E-journals & E-Books List". (2) Refining search results of Discovery by "subject". First, please search materials at the KULINE [Articles] tab or [Discovery] tab. Then at the search results page, you can refine your search by selecting the subjects under "SUBJECT TERMS" on the left side of the results.

[Discovery] tab When you search for articles in Japanese: You can search for articles in Japanese by two ways. (1) Using databases which contain Japanese articles. On the Advanced Search page at the KULINE [Articles] tab or [Discovery] tab, please click "ALL" and access the database list. Then you can search the databases which contain Japanese articles. - It is also possible to access databases which Kyoto University subscribes to at "E-journals & E-Books List".
(2) Refining search results of Discovery by language First, please search materials at the KULINE [Articles] tab or [Discovery] tab. Then at the search results page, you can refine your search by selecting "Japanese" under LANGUAGE on the left side of the results.
Kyoto University Research Information Repository (KURENAI) contains peer-reviewed journal articles, dissertations, departmental bulletin papers and any kind of scholarly works of Kyoto University.
In [KURENAI] tab, you can search full-texts stored at KURENAI.

How to find and use Kyoto University Doctoral Dissertations
Use "Advanced Search" in [KU Search] tab of KULINE.Make sure to check the material type box of "Dissertations". After that, enter the title or the author field, and then click search. Then, check Bibliography Details of the search result.

To find dissertations held by NDL, search NDL-OPAC. To use them, read "How to use Doctoral Theses" [only available in Japanese] (Research Navi).
We treat dissertations as quasi-rare books at Kyoto University Main Library. To read them, you need to put a hold on the books. For further information, see "How to use Rare Materials". When you would like to make a photocopy of a doctoral dissertation held by KU Main Library, you need to obtain permission from the author even if you copy a part of it. In principle, such permission shall include the author's signature and seal, but any format is fine.
Each faculty library may hold doctoral dissertations.After searching a dissertation in advanced search at [KU Search] tab of KULINE, check the search results of "Ddis" (The degree subjects) field in Bibliography Details. Kyoto University Doctoral Dissertations released on the Internet
At KULINE dissertations search (use "Advanced Search" in [KU Search] tab of KULINE and check the material type box of "Dissertations"), you can find not only dissertation bibliography but also the followings.

Abstract of the dissertation and summary of thesis defense (Ph.D.s granted after May 1998)

NDL provides digitalized dissertations [Only available in Japanese] with the authors' consent out of all the ones sent in to NDL (1) from 1991 to 2000, (2) after 2013. It is a useful site and you can easily access online materials.
Bachelor and Master theses from Kyoto University
KU Main Library do not hold the Bachelor and Master theses from Kyoto University. Some of our faculty libraries may hold them. Please check the faculty that awarded you Ph.D, and contact the faculty library accordingly.
KU Article Linker is an open URL link-resolver, which navigates a full-text article from search results of library bibliographic databases.
Clicking "KU Article Linker" icon/found on search results of bibliographic databases, a new window which connects to licensed electronic journals or full-texts will be displayed. Using this window, it is easy to get full-text articles or locate journals.
The designated "Plug-in" enables off-campus access to most of e-resources. Before accessing e-resources, turn on the "Plug-in", and login with your ID. For more information, please refer to the link below.

It is not possible to cancel an "Interlibrary Loan" request once it has been processed, but otherwise, it can be done via Your Library Record page on MyKULINE system, for which you need to log in first.
After logging in, the list of current requests for the copies or books can be viewed in your "Library Record."
Cancellation can be made for the itemsunder request received "Under application"only. Please check the box of the request and click the "Cancel Request" button here. You can't cancel the other requests via MYKULINE, therefore, please contact the Apply Library.
* When you check a request box and click the "Remove from the List" button, your request is taken out of your request list. Please note that this process does not cancel your request.
MyKULINE is a web-based personal service that allow you to make full use of library services. You may need to apply for using this online services. For further information, please see Guide to Kyoto University Library Network Online Services.
This service consists of the following four main functions.
1. Confirmation of Your Library Record It is possible to confirm the the materials you are borrowing and borrowed, extend due dates, confirm the status of your Interlibrary Loan Requests and modify the registered personal information.
2. My Folder It is possible to save search conditions and display your bookmarked items.
3. New Arrival Alert This function inform you when the new volume of some journal or new materials containing specific keywords arrive at the campus library by E-mail ans RSS feed reader.

Log in to MyKULINE.
Click "Kyoto University Library Notifications to Mr./Ms.: XX" in "MyKULINE - Your Library Record".
Click the "Personal info." button in "Personal info." of "Your Library Record".
Click "Change Personal Info." to modify personal data. (The updated mobile e-mail address is also registered as the user information in Library System. Once registered, you can select this mobile e-mail address as your contact when making a reservation or request copy and loan as well.)

A. Bookmark It is a tool which makes the book list on the web. You can register the bibliography of materials you already read or wish to read. You can see your bookmark list on Search Result screen or Bibliography Details screen.
What you can do on Bookmark list
Ootput - Tab-delimited Format, Refer/BibIX Format By checking the checkbox of the material on your list, you can download the one you select with tab-delimited format or Refer/BibIX format.
Delete By checking the checkbox of the material on your list, you can remove it from your list.
RefWorks / EndNoteBasic By checking the checkbox of the material on your list, you can directly export its bibliographical information to reference management software such as "RefWorks" or "EndNoteWeb." *What's reference management software?(only available in Japanese)
B. My Search You can save your search criteria. You can use them again next time or later. "Combination Search" lets you search based on the combination of words or search criteria you already saved.
By clicking the button on the upper right of the Search Result screen, you can see the My Search list you registered.
By checking the checkbox of the material on your list, you can remove it from your list.
Refer Browsing History Browsing History automatically save the list of materials which you searched for or browsed in KULINE until the browser is closed (or no operation has been performed for a long period of time). * This screen will be shown after you click the "Browsing History."
Save as Bookmark To check materials which you searched for or browsed in KULINE at a later date, please save as a bookmark (up to 120 records [as of May 25, 2015]). You can do that at Search Results or Bibliography Details.
Method 1) Selet the check box of the materials you want to bookmark at Search Results and click .
Method 2) Click at Bibliography Details.
In MyKULINE, you can confirm the bookmark list you saved materials as bookmark.
Refer Search History My Search automatically save the search condition which you used to search in KULINE until the browser is closed (or no operation has been performed for a long period of time). Search History can be confirmed by clicking the [Search History] button at the top of the screen.
* This screen will be shown after you click the "Search History."
Save as My Search To save search conditions which you used to search in KULINE, please select the checkboxes of the search conditions that you want to save as My Search and click the "Add to Favorites" button in Search History.
In MyKULINE, you can confirm the search conditions you saved as My Search.
"Serials Alert" service is available to you. To apply for this service, you will need ECS-ID (Student Account) or SPS-ID (Faculty and Staff Account). With this service, you can register the serials of " accession continuing" held by KU libraries. You will be notified of an alert mail when the new serial has arrived. You can register up to 30 serials. (2014.05)
How to apply for Serials Alert
Method 1) When you search KULINE and find the serial in which you would like to apply for serials alert at Bibliography Details, please click the "Submit" button of the holding library and its location.
Method 2) Click "New Arrival Alert" at MyKULINE menu. If you aren't logged in to MyKULINE, you may do so either before or after clicking on "New Arrival Alert."
When the "New Arrival Alert" screen is displayed, click on "Serials Alert" under "New Arrival Alert Menu" on the right. Then, click on the "Add New Alert" button. After searching for the serials (you wish to look at), repeat the procedures as Method 1.
How to register for Serials Alert information (* are required fields.)
After entering the fields related to email notifications, click on "Confirm."
